An Equation for Success

Sara Lingerfelt has always loved math and wants her students to share that same passion. "Math was always my strong point. I want math to be fun and exciting – that”s my goal."

Lingerfelt teaches 7th grade math at Buford Middle School, a program of study that covers algebra, geometry, data and numbers and operations. "It”s different from everything they”ve learned in kindergarten through 6th grade. Instead of just learning the formulas in geometry, they learn how the shapes are created," Lingerfelt says.

Lingerfelt was named Teacher of the Year after only five years in teaching and was shocked when she heard the news. "I am still new to teaching so this is the last thing I expected. I was definitely touched that my peers would choose me."

The Buford native says that teaching is her calling. Lingerfelt actually earned a business administration degree from the University of Georgia before she discovered that she wanted to teach. Lingerfelt says, "I was in the business field for about one year, and I just felt that teaching was where I was supposed to be."

Lingerfelt earned her teaching certification and master”s degree in middle grades math and social studies from Breneau University. She also holds a specialist degree in middle grades math, language arts and social studies from Piedmont College.

Lingerfelt says she enjoys the day-to-day challenges that come with being a teacher as well as being with her students. Beyond making math enjoyable, her overall goal is to encourage her students to "make a difference."
