As the largest and most comprehensive research institution in the central coastal Southeast, Georgia Southern University”s commitment to educational excellence and technological advancements spans more than a century. Georgia Southern continues to be one of the top choices in the state for new freshmen and HOPE scholars and this fall, the University expects a record enrollment of more than 20,000 students.# The University”s students are as diverse as its degree programs, coming to Statesboro from 49 U.S. states and nearly 100 nations from around the world.

Dramatic Transformation
Ten years ago, the University began to not only grow in size, but in academic quality. The results have been incredible.# Today, with an average freshman SAT score well above the national average, the University has experienced exceptional achievement in multiple areas during its dramatic transformation.

Students are at the center of everything Georgia Southern does.# Whether it is building modern, upscale student housing, expanding the Recreation Activity Center, creating more study abroad opportunities or encouraging the growth and diversity of the student body, Georgia Southern has created an environment where students can thrive, learn, and prepare for their future.

During the past decade, nearly $300 million in construction and renovation projects have been completed to accommodate the campus” growth including a number of modern apartment-style residence halls, and state-of-the-art classroom and recreation facilities.# Most recently, Georgia Southern opened Centennial Place, a 1,001-bed apartment style residence hall complete with a Cold Stone Creamery, Einstein Bros. Bagel restaurant and more.

Academically, the University has been recognized as a Doctoral/Research University by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.# The University”s continued rise has resulted in increased national recognition including numerous rankings that are setting Georgia Southern apart from its peers.

Some of the most prestigious publications in the country, including Forbes Magazine and The Princeton Review, have lauded the University for academic distinction. Additionally, Georgia Southern has once again been recognized as one of America”s Best Colleges and one of the “Best 301 Business Schools”# in the nation. The University”s business and nursing programs have also been recognized among 2012″s Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News and World Report.# Additionally, Georgia Southern has been recognized as one of Forbes” top universities in the nation for minority science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Georgia Southern continues to focus on its future as a national comprehensive institution and is adding new degree programs that are attracting interest from around the world.# This fall, the University will begin offering bachelor”s degrees in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering joining Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia in hosting these programs.# The new programs are already attracting a lot of interest, providing outstanding high school seniors with an additional in-state option for engineering.

Georgia Southern”s College of Information Technology, the only one of its kind in the Southeast, is continuing to build its resume, recently becoming one of only 10 universities in the world to teach the cutting-edge technology of virtualization on VM software.# The College has also been designated the first International VMware IT Academy Center, making it one of only a select few in the country to offer the highly valued SAP certification as part of its degree program.# It also received distinctive honors when its Game Design Program was selected by The Princeton Review as one of the top 50 programs in the United States and Canada from a field of more than 500.

Georgia Southern University”s College of Education has become one of Georgia”s most respected for future teachers.# From its undergraduate programs to its online and campus options for graduate teacher education, a large portion of Georgia”s teachers and administrators are graduates of the college. In addition, numerous alumni are award recipients, including the Siemens National AP Teacher of the Year as well as multiple Georgia Teachers of the Year.

The Campus and The Community
Without a doubt, Georgia Southern boasts one of the most picturesque and iconic college campuses in the country.# Like the University as a whole, the historic campus has undergone an amazing transformation. Students
Georgia Southern”s University Honors Program attracts high-achieving students to its reserved classes, seminars and programs. The Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement encourages students to make leadership a part of their college resumes and a life-enriching skill.

Students are engaged in community volunteerism, campus theatre productions, academic organizations and recreational athletics. They can choose from more than 200 campus organizations, including 29 social sororities and fraternities, honor societies, religious, political and service groups.
