For the third consecutive season, Grizzly fans will have an opportunity to enjoy postseason play in Lawrenceville as the Association of Independent Institutions announced that Georgia Gwinnett College will host the league”s championship tournaments for baseball, softball and men”s and women”s soccer during the 2015-16 seasons.
It marks a return for each event, beginning with the soccer championships, which were played at Grizzly Soccer Complex in 2013 and culminated in the Grizzly men”s team hoisting the first of two consecutive A.I.I. conference championship trophies. The format for this year”s tournament will feature a change from years past, however, as both the men”s and women”s tournament fields will include six teams instead of four, and each team that advances to the championship match will earn an automatic berth into the NAIA postseason.
The baseball tournament will return to GGC for a second consecutive season, and it will be the third home conference tournament in a row for the reigning A.I.I. champion Grizzly softball team. Those events will also feature format changes as the baseball field has expanded to eight teams, with three members earning an NAIA automatic berth. Softball will remain a six-team field, but the number of automatic selections to the NAIA tournament will increase to two.
By nature of being the host, GGC owns an automatic bid in all four postseason events, and the first one on the calendar will be the soccer championships, which are slated to take place Nov. 12-15. The softball championship will be played May 5-7, and baseball will follow from May 7-10.
