Going the Extra Mile: Suhayla Saudin

GSMST is filled with exceptional students who are willing to go the extra mile both in class and out of class. One such student is Suhayla Saudin. Suhayla is a senior at GSMST, a member of four clubs, and devotes thee to seven hours per week to community service.

She is part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) club, the Muslim Student Association (MSA), the Environmentally Concerned Organization of Students (ECOS Club), and Relay For Life. All four clubs help the community in some way. VITA helps low income families with their taxes, the MSA brings awareness and knowledge to people about the peaceful religion of Islam, the ECOS Club helps to bring awareness about the environment’s dire condition and collects recyclable items from all the classrooms in the school, and Relay For Life organizes events to raise money for cancer research.

Suhayla also participates in community service organizations outside of school. With the Gwinnett Islamic Circle, she works with Adopt-A-Road, a litter prevention program to keep cities beautiful; Feed The Hungry Foundation, a charity created to help feed local homeless and low income people; Habitat For Humanity, an organization creating homes for the homeless; and ICNA Relief, a charity assisting underprivileged Americans.

Suhayla has also interned at some really exciting places. The summer before junior year, she interned at the Shree Hindu Mandal Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Now she is interning at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center in Buford, Georgia. Both of her internships relate to what she would like to pursue in college: Public Health.

Suhayla is just one example of the interesting and hardworking students of GSMST and the Gwinnett County Public School system.
