Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation

The Sports Hall of Fame pays tribute to accomplished athletes and coaches of Gwinnett County. While each Hall of Fame inductee has made significant contributions to Gwinnett athletics, inductees have also exemplified sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and character, on and off the field.

New inductees are chosen in the fall and spotlighted at the annual spring banquet. Over the past six years, 36 individuals have been honored in the Sports Hall of Fame.

Funds raised from the awards banquet provide college scholarships for graduating seniors in Gwinnett. Since its inception, the GCPS Foundation has awarded 593 student scholarships, totaling $657,000.

The class of 2016 will be inducted on May 6, 2016, at the Infinite Energy Center. Call 678-301-7287 to reserve your seat.

CAPTION: Inducted in the 2015 class of the Gwinnett Sports Hall of Fame, David Pollack is a Shiloh High graduate and was a three-time All American while playing football at the University of Georgia. He was a first-round pick in the NFL draft, but his pro career was cut short by injury. Now a college football analyst for ESPN and one of the hosts of “College Game Day,” Pollack says his success was made possible by his family, his coaches and his teachers. “None of us got here without the love and support of others.”

Determined to Excel

Bright, capable, and determined in the face of adversity, Sally Tran worked hard to become the 2015 valedictorian of Berkmar High School. Tran now attends Duke University after being chosen to receive the highly selective QuestBridge college scholarship along with a supplemental scholarship from the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation.

“Students like Sally set an exceptional example for those following behind,” says Berkmar Principal Al Taylor. “The Foundation helps deserving students maximize their potential by providing assistance with the cost of higher education,” adds Kelly Herndon, executive director of the GCPS Foundation. Donations from individuals and businesses provide the funding for GCPS Foundation scholarships.

“Having had my practice in Lawrenceville for almost two decades, and having watched my four children grow up here, I would say I have long surpassed covering 2,000 sporting events at the high school and professional level as team doctor. The sports legends who have come through Gwinnett have become part of my legacy as well.  It is a pleasure to get behind this night of recognition for exemplary individual achievement, on and off the field of competition.”

– Dr. Gary Levengood, Sports Medicine South

“The annual Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame attracts guests from across the country for a night of celebration for those who have brought recognition and honor to our community. To further have the night act as a fundraiser where the stars of yesterday lift up the stars of today through the district scholarship campaign answers why we love this night.”

– Stan Hall, Executive Director, Gwinnett Sports Commission
