“God Has a Reason For This”

What Tony Velo said five years ago still holds true today. It got him through loss of vision, through optic nerve tumor growth and countless MRIs. It was his prayer when chemotherapy left him in a wheelchair. A victorious proclamation when he taught himself to walk again.

“God has a reason for this. All I have to do is trust him and live my life.”

He said this when interviewed five years ago by Gwinnett Magazine. And–on a recent afternoon at Suwanee Town Center–echoed those remarks with a bright smile.

He’s been battling cancer since he was just over a year old. Now, as a 16-year-old and Parkview High School sophomore, the fight continues.

Tony also believes that God is using his story as a way to inspire others.

Case in point: “There was a man who went to our church,” says Tony’s mom, Cathy. “This man had read the article about Tony. He had stomach cancer. He was on the verge of giving up. He was just existing day to day. So, he had read the article, and he told his wife, ‘you know what? If this kid can do this, I can do this,’ and from then on until the day he died, he lived.”
