Lanier Middle School to use grant to build outdoor garden

Lanier Middle School students will roll up their sleeves and build an outdoor garden using among other things, recycled containers. The supplies for the project were funded by a Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) Bright Ideas grant.

Last fall, Jackson EMC awarded 36 local teachers from 24 schools with $50,608.31 in educational grants. Five Lanier Middle School teachers were awarded a total of nearly $7,400 to be used for different projects. The grants are funded through unclaimed capital credits. Through the Bright Ideas program, educators can earn up to $2,000 each for innovative classroom projects that would otherwise go unfunded. This program provides funds to state-certified educators in public middle schools in Jackson EMC’s service area. A panel of outside judges evaluated the blind applications for innovation, implementation, objectives, student involvement, goals, and budgets.
