1ST ANNUAL PAAL’S CYCLING CRITERIUM
COOLRAY FIELD
Lawrenceville
Criterium racing is one of the most common forms of bike racing in America. The criterium, is a multi-lap race of 45-90 minutes in duration held on a closed course, generally less than 1 mile in length. These races are extremely fast, full of excitement, with speeds topping 30 MPH. Often there are races within a race. ‘Primes’ (cash or merchandise prizes, pronounced “preems”) are often given away on various laps as an enticement to “shake things up”. Racers have to decide whether to take the risk for an intermediate prize at the expense of a win or podium spot at the end of the race.
This type of racing is easy to watch for spectators and more accessible for the media.
