The opening of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Braselton on April 1, 2015, marked a historical moment for Northeast Georgia Health System as well as the state of Georgia. As the states first net-new hospital in almost 20 years, NGMC Braselton brought the award-winning services of the States #1 hospital to many who needed access closer to home.
Were honored to provide advanced medical and surgical services, as well as emergency services, for the communities surrounding Greater Braselton during the past year, says Anthony Williamson, president of NGMC Braselton. The volume of patients utilizing our new facility has surpassed our initial projections, proving there was a real need for health care services in this community.
During the past year, more than 30,000 patients received care in the Emergency Department; more than 4,100 patients stayed in one of the hospitals inpatient units; and more than 3,200 surgical procedures were performed. Both inpatient and outpatient cardiology services were also highly anticipated in Braselton. Since April 1, 2015, more than 26,000 cardiovascular tests and procedures have been performed at NGMC Braselton.
The first year at NGMC Braselton also saw the start of construction on the first expansion project for the hospital. Just one month after opening its doors, NGMC Braselton began a $16 million project to add a labor and delivery unit. Set to open in October 2016, the unit will include 10 labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites; two c-section suites; and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
We have celebrated a variety of milestones during this year, says Mike Skobba, chief nursing officer at NGMC Braselton. Visits to our emergency department exceeded expectations, prompting us to triple the number of providers and increase our staff. The newest da Vinci Robotic Surgical System was added to our surgical unit, and new infusion services were launched so that patients needing daily infusion of medications or blood products could receive care with minimal travel.
Additional growth included the addition of a connector bridge in August 2015, connecting the Main and West portions of the NGMC Braselton campus. In November 2015, radiation therapy services began in Medical Plaza 1 on the NGMC Braselton campus, completing the continuum of cancer care close to home for area patients.
Congratulations and thank you to the more than 750 staff members and 100 physicians who continue to work so hard to provide quality, compassionate care to each and every person who walks through our doors, says Williamson. But above all, we offer our deepest gratitude to the patients who have chosen NGMC Braselton as their preferred provider for healthcare services and to the surrounding communities who have welcomed us so warmly.
