Not your Average Sport

In many ways, the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) is just like any other high school, with our anxious students, determined teachers and peers, and exciting events. However, one of the many things that sets GSMST apart from regular high schools is our lack of a sports team and an official mascot.

While schools around Gwinnett wear their team’s jerseys, attend regular football games, and cheer on their athletic peers, GSMST takes pride in our school’s robotics teams. At GSMST, robotics is considered by many students to be our “sport.” School spirit at GSMST stems from our enthusiasm for our school’s robotic teams, the VEX and FTC divisions. The VEX teams are coached by Mr. James Dart and the FTC division is led by Mr. Mike Coddington. The teams are largely independent and it is mainly the students’ determination to excel that contributes to GSMST robotics team’s success.

The VEX portion of the robotics team is made up of six different teams ranging from 675A to 675F, while FTC has four teams. Hardworking members of the club work on their robots weekly from three to five on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to prepare for their robotics competitions, which they have dominated for the past few years. The accomplishment of the GSMST robotics teams has advanced to the VEX Robotics World Championship for nine years in a row and this has truly distinguished the club from not only the robotics teams across Georgia, but also teams from all over the world.

Although dates have not been finalized for all future competitions, the Robotics Club Outreach Vice President Cameron Leung, has confirmed that the closest date will be October 14th for the VEX competition at South Forsyth High School. This exciting event will provide an opportunity for teams to demonstrate their hard work and showcase their robot’s’ performance at competition. The public is encouraged to attend and cheer on the GSMST VEX robotics teams to victory.
