We”ve made big plans for this year, and thanks to our sports marketing division, the Gwinnett Sports Commission (GSC), we have been able to kick off 2006 with a major coup!

We”re proud to announce that once again, Gwinnett County will host the 2006 adidas® Superstar Camp at Suwanee Sports Academy, July 6-10, 2006. Gwinnett County”s winning bid topped several cities, including New York City, Indianapolis and Tampa.

Just a few years ago, it was unlikely that Gwinnett would best major cities when competing for a major sports event. However, the development of the GSC (named by the National Association of Sports Commissions as their "2005 Sports Commission of the Year") has played a major role in Gwinnett”s increasing prominence as a sports event destination.

One of the buzzwords of the GCVB”s 2006 sales and marketing strategies is "partnerships" and that winning bid was an excellent example of teamwork. The GSC, led by Director Ginger Lindsey, together with the Suwanee Sports Academy, the Atlanta Marriott Gwinnett Place and Lextra Management, put together a package that immediately wowed the adidas Executive Committee. Traveling to adidas” national headquarters in Portland and presenting a detailed one-on-one presentation, we were able to not only emphasize our experience, but our strong community support and top-notch facilities.

Partnership is also the name of the arts and culture game as plans come together for the 2nd Annual "Barefoot in the Park," the winner of "2005 Best Downtown Special Event." The festival”s mission is three-fold: 1.) Present a high-quality juried show that showcases Gwinnett as an arts destination; 2.) offer our fine local artists a chance to market their work; and 3.) support our local arts and cultural organizations. So mark your calendar for March 19-21, 2006. We”ll also once again have the Scientific-Atlanta Children”s Art Park, full of arts and children”s activities!

The first 1,000 children who visit the tent will also receive a free Children”s Art Park T-Shirt.

The Eagle Rock Distributing Concert Stage will be rocking all weekend with performances by local and regional dance, theatre and performing arts groups. Visit our new Web site, www.barefootinthepark.org, for more information.

The BellSouth Classic, fresh off the exciting news of their tournament date change (to May, beginning in 2007) is another GCVB/GSC partner. Having a major PGA tournament in our own backyard is a coup, and the event date change will allow tournament organizers to bring in the PGA Tour”s top-ranked players. The GSC and the GCVB, in conjunction with Gwinnett Center, will once again partner to use the tournament to show event and meeting planners the type of event hospitality we can offer.
