Publix Super Markets donated hundreds of food items Tuesday to Central Gwinnett High School.
The items will be used to stock the newest CARE Closet location. The CommunityAssistance and Resource Effort (CARE) Closet is a confidential food pantry stocked with non-perishable food for high school students who don’t have enough food to eat at home but are too embarrassed to ask for help.
The CARE Closet was founded by 16-year-old twins Lauren and Steven Seroyer, who attend Peachtree Ridge High School. The duo won the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s 2016 Inaugural SPARK Gwinnett Prize which included a $25,000 grant.
The Shroyer’s plan to use the money to create CARE Closets at every Gwinnett County public school. Central Gwinnett High will be the organization’s second location.
CARE Closets are located in a counselor’s office or in an isolated and anonymous area where students can visit to shop for food items to take home. The process is 100% confidential, only counselors and administrators know who accesses the closet.
