Young Lawrenceville Musician is a Rising Star

Drake VanKohnDrake VonKohn can”t imagine a world without music. The notes, the chords, the frets, the strumming of the strings on his guitars: it”s in his blood. It”s as much a part of him as his blonde hair, his blue eyes, the southern inflection in his voice when he stands before a concert crowd or croons from the stage of a local venue.

From the age of four, when he started learning and playing classical piano, he was hooked. By nine, he”d mastered the piano and moved on to the guitar. His passion for music continues to evolve. His love to perform is his life”s goal.

Nowadays, the 16-year-old Collins Hill High School student plays country, classic rock and pop hits at all types of venues…private parties, fundraising events, restaurants, weddings and just about anywhere crowds gather to hear live music. Drake is a member of the CHHS Chorus and the a cappella group – Boys from the Hill. He is also a high school/middle school worship leader at 12Stone church.

He”s already performed at several venues in Nashville (Tootsies, Rippy”s, The Blue Bird Caf##) on multiple occasions. Recently, he was invited to be an opening act at Wild Bills in Duluth…and that”s a very big opportunity for a young artist. The date for his show will be sometime in October/November of this year. “There are certain people there who evaluate performers, and it”s like an audition every time you play,” he said. “If you”re good enough, you could one day be a headlining act.”

Whether playing at Wild Bills or any other venue, it”s all fun for Drake. “It”s what I love. It never feels like work. It”s just sharing what I love with other people,” he said. “I”m just having a good time.”

His favorite music? He likes Zac Brown Band, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. He”s also partial to the way John Mayer plays guitar. Like all young musicians, Drake hopes to make it big one day, too.

But in the meantime, he”s here in Gwinnett County playing gigs most weekends. Those interested in hearing the rising young musician can visit his web site www.drake-music.com or his Facebook page, Drake Vonkohn Music, and see when and where he is performing.
