Guide to Gwinnett: Real Estate

“The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned.”
-Maya Angelou

Whether it’s a custom-built dream home or that first apartment out of college, our home is our sanctuary, that special place to relax and recharge. Finding, buying or selling any type of home can be fun, challenging, exhilarating and probably a bit stressful. Always a good time to get professional help.

There’s no place like home.

Your perfect home, neighborhood, office or retirement destination is just around the corner in Gwinnett.

As the holidays approach, families all over Gwinnett will load up their cars with family and food, and head out to parts well-known: Grandma’s house in the suburbs or the kids’ new place inside the Perimeter. And as friends and family walk through the door, they won’t just be walking into a building, they’ll be stepping into a gathering.

“Homes are bigger than sticks and bricks,” says Tommy Slappey, co-owner of Peggy Slappey Properties in Buford. “They’re about relationships and families.” If anyone knows something about families and working together, it’s the Slappeys, fourth-generation realtors.

Since 1982, Tommy and his wife of 51 years, have combined their talents to make every house they help get a family into or sell a gateway to someone’s future. They’ve been, as Tommy says, “blessed to be a blessing.” But that wasn’t always easy.

Economic downturns in the late ’80s were hurting Tommy’s building business, so he gravitated toward Peggy’s side of the industry, buying and selling real estate. They opened their three-person office at a time when home sales were falling and interest rates were through the roof. But, Peggy says, “Failure was never an option.” And there were plenty of opportunities for failure in the years ahead, culminating in the Great Recession of 2009 that saw plummeting housing prices and massive foreclosures. But through it all, they’ve established an award-winning company.

“Failures are an opportunity for education, and we learned a lot,” says Tommy.

Peggy points with pride to the influence PSP has had through the years, not just in giving back to local charitable organizations and getting families into homes, but to the reach each sale brings the community by involving dozens of people per house, from home inspectors to closing attorneys.

“Everyone needs a home,” says Peggy, “And we know we are impacting lives with every home sold.”

With their sons working with them, and the rest of the staff that may as well be kin, there’s no end in sight for this close-knit business that treats everyone under their roof and the roofs of their customers like family.
