Gwinnett County Public Schools Celebrates EMMY Awards

The Broadcast and Distance Learning team from Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is celebrating after the Southeast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (SE-NATAS) presented GCPS with three EMMY Awards. The honors recognize the team’s talent and creativity in creating original productions that support teaching and learning.

The SE-NATAS presented GCPSTV with two EMMY Awards for Q’s Story, and another Emmy for the Cooper O’Brien Courage Award. Arquevious “Q” Crane is a remarkable young man who, despite being paralyzed in a varsity football game, rose above his injury and not only graduated high school on time, but also went on to obtain a college degree. The love of his South Gwinnett high school coaches, friends, and family— and the entire GCPS community— gave him the strength he needed to overcome adversity and achieve success. The video is a testament to his character and compelling drive to “just keep moving.” Q’s Story earned an EMMY Award in the following categories: “Sports – Program Feature/Segment” and “Editor – Program (Non-News).”

Cooper O’Brien was diagnosed with a rare cancer while attending North Gwinnett Middle School. His courageous battle against the disease, and his desire to live his last year of life as close to normal as possible set the stage for his family, friends, and school community to rally behind him. The Cooper O’Brien Memorial Courage Award was established to keep Cooper’s legacy and spirit alive for generations to come. This video helps to shine a light on his life and his lasting message to “just keep believing.” Cooper O’Brien Courage Award won in the “Children/Youth (All Ages) category.

Greg LaHatte, the school district’s director of broadcast and distance learning, was excited about his team’s work saying, “We are so proud of our entire GCPSTV production team and the world-class videos they produce. Our schools, teachers, students, and staff should also be commended for it is their stories we tell that win the acclaim of the Academy and our industry peers.”
