Gwinnett high schools make AP Honor Schools list

Earlier today State School Superintendent Richard Woods released the list of Georgia schools named as AP Honor Schools. This list includes 18 of Gwinnett’s 19 traditional high schools (Discovery HS opened this school year), as well as a charter school (Gwinnett Online Campus) and a special school (GSMST). These 20 Gwinnett schools are part of the 272 schools from throughout the state honored by the Georgia Department of Education. “We are very proud of the hard work and commitment to rigor that helped land 20 of our high schools on the AP Honor Schools list,” says Dr. Kevin Tashlein, Gwinnett’s associate superintendent for School Improvement and Operations. “Last year, 14,815 students took 28,620 AP exams, with 60.3% percent scoring a three or higher to earn college credit or advanced placement. Today’s announcement reinforces this success and serves as a reminder of the good job our schools are doing in preparing students for college and the future.” Yesterday, the state announced Peachtree Ridge HS as one of five Georgia high schools named winners of the AP Champion Award. This award recognizes efforts toward eliminating barriers that restrict access to AP, evidence of efforts to ensure AP classes at the school reflect the diversity of the school’s population, the illustration of intentions to build and sustain a positive culture around AP, and creative promotion of AP coursework. As an honoree, the school received $500 to advance its AP program. In terms of AP Honor Schools, several GCPS schools were recognized in more than one category. Archer High, Collins Hill High, Grayson High, and Norcross High, made the list in five of the six categories.
